How to make the best berry smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries etc)
  • 2 cups nut milk
  • 2 or 3 cubes ice (can be added now or in the glass later)

Optional Extras:

  • 1/4 avocado or half a banana if you want your smoothie to be thicker
  • Top up your blender with some filtered water if you want your smoothie to have a more juice-like consistency. You can also substitute 1 cup of nut milk with 1 cup of filtered water.
  • 1 tsp coconut oil, chia seeds or maca powder if you wan to sneak in some extra goodness!

Method:

  • Wash all fruit
  • Add all ingredients to your blender or food processor
  • Blend
  • Pour into a chilled glass and enjoy!

Notes

Grabbing some fresh fruits and freezing them in individual portions that day means you can enjoy this refreshing drink at a moments notice. You wont have to worry about the fruits being in season or going out to the shops to buy the ingredients, they’ll be ready in your freezer for you.

Freezing banana works really well but cut up the banana into slices before freezing it. Slightly riper bananas always taste that little bit sweeter.

Benefits at a Glance:

Berries contain antioxidants which are great for keeping those free radicals in check. They are also high in fibre which helps promote a healthy digestive system.

Nut milk is a dairy alternative that has multiple benefits, it is very low in calories (not that I count mine), and the unsweetened version wont raise your blood sugar levels – always a bonus! The enriched versions have a good source of vitamin D and E and you can make this delicious drink in the comfort of your own home, if you have the time or are curious to see how your home made version compares to the shop bought version.

Chia seeds contain Omega 3 Fatty acids, fibre, protein, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, antioxidants, iron… The list goes on.  I have a very loving relationship with these little gems: I love them and they love my body!

Coconut oil is what I call a ‘good fat’ and it contributes to the increase of good cholesterol in your body. It has known to curb hunger pangs (as most good fats do) and help you crave less sugary foods, as well as potentially help burn more of the fat on your body you want to get rid of.

Maca Powder contains protein, fibre, carbohydrates, and vitamin c to name but a few. This Peruvian plant can improve your mood, help with menopause, increase your sex drive, increase memory capacity, and help fight free radicals due to the antioxidants it contains.

Avocado is another one of those good fats I was talking about earlier.  This little green gem is full of a variety of vitamins, and can help with maintaining a healthy heart. It may also help with weight loss as it makes you feel fuller for longer and you wont experience those pesky hunger pangs or sugar cravings as much.

I hope you have found this article helpful and that you will try this recipe some time.  I would love to hear which variation of berry smoothie you chose to go with. Or if you have a favourite berry smoothie recipe that works for you, I would love to hear what it is.

Much Love and happy Blending!

    1. Yes Sharon, these smoothies are great for getting rid of that sweet craving, and if you add in some Chia Seeds you’ll have that added weight loss benefit. Freezing bananas are a great food-hack I agree, however I would suggest only freezing bananas for smoothie purposes.

Enjoy making ice lollies for the grand children!
