Have you ever heard about the SMART approach for reaching your goals? The word S-M-A-R-T refers to these five parameters that help you to be more productive, subsequently reaching the goals you’re setting for yourself.
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Relevant
T – Time-Bound
Shaping these parameters as they relate to your personal goals ensures your goals are achievable within a particular time period. With the SMART criteria, you eliminate uncertainties or guesswork and set a clear timeline which makes it simpler to keep track of your progress and quickly identify any missed objectives. Here is how you can implement the SMART approach to reach your goals.
SMART Approach For Reaching Your Goals
S – Specific
To make it easier for you to reach any goal, you must be specific. Ask yourself what it is you want to accomplish, the why behind your goal, and what steps are you going to take in order to achieve it. By having the answers to these questions, you help to motivate yourself and understand what you’re aiming towards.
M – Measurable
It’s easy to set goals, but it’s not as easy to reach them if you’re setting goals that are unmeasurable. Quantifying your objectives (ensuring they are reachable) makes it easier to track your progress and know when you’ve crossed the finish line.
A – Achievable
At this point, you need to assess your goals and ensure they are not unrealistic. Ask yourself whether your goals are accomplishable and reasonable. We often set goals for ourselves that are not really reasonable and soon realize that we’ve bitten off too much than we can chew. Remember you are in control and are the one that is setting these goals for yourself.
R- Relevant
This is where your “why” comes in. Think about why you’re setting these specific goals. Once you know the reason behind your goals, you might find it easier to achieve. It doesn’t make sense to set goals that are not relevant, or that won’t benefit you in any way.
For instance, if you’re planning on losing a few pounds, why do you want to do it? Maybe you decided to adopt a healthier lifestyle, and losing weight helps you to do just that. Also, don’t set goals to please others, but for yourself and your peace of mind and well-being.
T – Time-Bound
To effectively measure success, it’s important to have a timeline. If you don’t have a set timeline, there is nothing that motivates you to keep going and reach your goals within a specific time limit. For example, say you want to lose a few pounds, ask yourself how much you want to lose, and decide on a timeline.
Losing weight slowly and by doing exercises and eating healthier will help you keep the weight off for longer. Having due dates for different goals help keep you focused and motivated to reach certain milestones.
