Inner Care Before Outer Care – 5 Elements That Impact Overall Wellness

Inner care before outer care is quintessential for having inner peace and taking care of others. Today I am sharing information about the five elements that impact overall wellness.  You need to look after yourself to be able to properly look after the wellbeing of others because you cannot pour from an empty cup. To enjoy overall wellness and be the best version of yourself you can be, there are various ways to accomplish this.

Wellness is attained by practicing healthy habits daily to enjoy better mental and physical wellness, so instead of merely surviving, you are thriving! According to the WHO (World Health Organization) the term “health” is defined as being in a state of complete mental, social, and physical well-being. It is not just enjoying good health without being physically ill. To attain overall wellness, there are a few key areas of your life that need to be addressed:

  • Exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Social Connectedness
  • Sleep
  • Mindfulness

Each of these elements directly impacts your mental and physical health. Making a few healthy choices that are implemented daily can go a long way in having positive social interactions, reducing stress levels, and attaining optimal wellness.

1. Exercise

Even if you follow a healthy eating plan, it’s still important to get some exercise. It doesn’t have to be strenuous physical activity. You can go for a walk around the block, take a few laps in your swimming pool, or dance to your favourite tunes. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of physical activity every day.

Even small lifestyle changes like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking to the corner café instead of driving will make a difference. There are various yoga styles that cater to different fitness levels that are worth pursuing.

2. Nutrition

Investing in a wholesome and nutritious meal plan is one of the first steps to becoming healthy. Instead of snacking on unhealthy carbs, rather pack raw veggies and fruits for those in-between-meal snacks.

Having healthy snacks on hand all the time will prevent you from falling into the temptation of ordering fast foods or buying unhealthy snacks at the vending machine. When you’re eating healthier and you’re starting to lose weight, it will boost your self-confidence and make you feel good about yourself.

3. Social Connectedness

Connecting with loved ones or friends frequently is an excellent way for improving your mental and physical health. Allocate a few minutes every day to reach out to at least one special person in your life. This way you’ll be staying socially connected and don’t forget to laugh. Laughter does wonders for mental and emotional wellbeing.

4. Sleep

Even when we’re asleep our bodies are working hard to keep us in tip-top shape. Avoid drinking caffeine during the afternoon or before bedtime. Create a bedtime routine that will help you fall and stay asleep so that your body can get the necessary rest to face the next day with the energy it needs.

5. Mindfulness

I bet you didn’t know that practicing mindfulness can benefit the mind and body, helping you stay focused and reprogramming your brain. Take a few minutes every day to think about what you’re feeling. The more you tap into your own thoughts and feelings, the more you become aware of your reactions to stressful situations. Yoga and meditation are excellent practices that you can try to get into a state of mindfulness.
